Request your Social Security Statement online!

Your Social Security Statement is an important tool in applying for Social Security disability benefit. The statement provides a year by year listing of your earnings and an estimate of your retirement and disability benefits.

Social Security used to mail the statement annually, about three months before your birthday. As of 2011, Social Security no longer mails out the Social Security Statement, except to workers 60 or over who are not yet receiving benefits. However as of May 1, 2012, you can request a statement online.

If you are not able to confirm your identity via the Social Security website, you can also request a “SEQY” (which lists your earnings) from your local Social Security office. You can then use the information in the SEQY with the online Social Security calculators to obtain an estimate of your Social Security disability benefits and Social Security retirement benefits.

07/05/12 UPDATE: A reader inform me that once you apply for Social Security disability benefits, Social Security locks you out of requesting an online Social Security statement the monthly benefit amount is no longer available, however you can still view your earnings. The only recommendation I can offer is to request the Social Security statement before you apply (if possible). Anyone else having this problem?

I applied for disability. I found out I could get my ssa statement online. I tried to check out the info and on my info online the disability amount is not available because I applied for SSDI, why?

Hmm, that’s odd. What does the toll free SSA phone line say ( 1-800-772-1213 ) ?

  • Brenda

    Tom,
I called SSA this a.m and . the representative said that the disability amount is unavailable at the time a person applies for disability so that it wont be a reason someone does or does not apply. I have no real clue what to think right now. Though her answer does make sense . My hearing was in Mid March 2012 and I have heard the longer it takes the better chances it will be denied.. :(

Wow! Since the application asks you if you *agree* with your earnings record and the online Social Security statement is the easiest way of getting that information, talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

Brenda, thank you for bringing this to my attention!

    Tom,
You are welcome. I’m still waiting to get a decision on my case. My hearing was on 3/13/2012. The judge asked if I would change a date for the disability. My atty went off record and we talked then agreed on a date of 10/2010. The Vocational Expert said that there are no jobs local or national that I could ever work. I do know about three weeks after the hearing the judge had made a decision. My atty said after the hearing that he thought the judge wasn’t happy that there were no jobs. The decision is going through the writing process and at this time it is in the editing dept. I’m just at this point ready for either decision so that I can get the appeal going if need be.
Thank you for all your help !!!!

    Tom,
I want to clarify on the Online Social Security Statement. You aren’t locked out of the Statement online, You are just not able to see your disability amount. All the other info is still available to be seen and read.
    Thanks,
    Brenda

I guess the online service is the most convenient way for requesting of statement so far. Even so, if you have further questions to ask, then it would be better to go to your nearest local office so you could clear
whatever hesitations you may have on your mind about your statement. It may take a little time in you though.
