From what I hear, SSA typically only requests records 1 year of past records. There are exceptions, but the scuttlebutt is there is a 12 month rule of thumb.

Individuals wanting to make sure SSA gets their records, need to obtain and submit the records themselves. Otherwise... they won't know what SSA did or didn't get until the decision is issued.

I guess what I'd do is start calling my doctors offices to find out if the SSA has made requests for documents. If they say no, then I'd call the SSA and explain to them so and so doctors hasn't been contacted yet for documentation. And that the SSA needs to do that like they've said they would.

Maybe part of the problem with a doctors office not providing medical records could be because of a payment problem?

I wonder if another problem could be that when SSA contacts the doctors, they could just ask for records from the past year instead of all of the record? As most of my tests have been years ago, and then there are some doctors I haven't seen in years. Partly because I have to change doctors or some other reason.

The initial stages are a bit like a game of blind man's bluff. SSA requests records based on the doctors an individual provides. However, an individual usually does not know what records have been obtained until the initial decision is issued (which lists the records obtained).

I have spoken with a number of claimants who were unpleasantly surprised to find that some if their doctors were not contacted or did not provide records.

Does this only matter when you go before a judge? Or during the begenning? It is my understanding when you file. You just give the SSA a list of your docs. Then they request medical records from them. So, they will get all of your records to go through. So, it looks like when you file, you can't pick and choose what the SSA gets unless you provide the records on your own vs. letting the SSA request it from your doctors.
