I don't believe most attorney's intentionally drag out Social Security cases. However, lawyers can be less than prompt (to put in nicely). Un-returned phone calls and messages are the number one complaint people have with lawyers!

And you're right, since legal fees can be up to $6,000, clients deserve attention when working with a lawyer. However changing attorney's comes with its own set of problems which I wrote about here: http://www.socialsecurityinsider.com/2008/09/sh...

All my best!

I am into my 20th month since filing my initial claim. The ALJ has the case and has ordered a CE, which I have done, and needs another copy of my Functional Capacity Exam. I have been very pleased with my attorney up to this point. The staff is where I have the issues. It is VERY annoying when I leave a voice mail message, or send an email to my case manager, and it gets agnored. I realize these folks are busy, so I am usually in touch once a month or so for an update. For instance, when the case manager emailed me that the ALJ wanted a better copy of my PFC exam, I tried repeatedly to get in touch with her to make arrangements to hand deliver it. The last time I mailed forms to them it took a week until the attorney got the forms from their PO Box. This is not exceptable. I never got a call back, so I mailed the forms. Just more delays in a rediculously slow process. On another note, as I said, so far I am pleased with the attorney representing me, and I have spoken to her on occaision, but I can see, due to how the attorneys and reps get paid, that it would be to an unscrupulous attorney's advantage to drag this along as much as possible.
