Celiac Disease

By , October 24th, 2008 | Celiac Sprue, Video | 6 Comments

Bob Kraft’s PISSD is one of my favorite disability blogs.  Bob recently wrote an article about Celiac Disease awareness:

Celiac disease is a hereditary allergy to gluten. In its worst forms it can be crippling. But more and more doctors are becoming aware of this disease and making proper diagnosis of it in their patients. Until only a few years ago, the symptoms frequently went undiagnosed.

Having helped suffers of Celiac Disease with their Social Security cases in Colorado, I have seen first hand the impact of this condition and the difficulty trying to get Social Security to accept that it is disabling.

Here is an introduction to Celiac Disease and its symptoms:

Did you know there is a celiac group (Happy Celiacs) on YouTube.  If you need support or recipes, take a look.

What kind of experiences have you had with Celiacs? Have you found any great sources of support?  Tell me in the comments.

Thanks for the mention Tomasz. I check your blog daily, and really like your practical tips for claimants. Keep up the good work!

Can Celiac Disease be considered a disability from the government?

Any medically recognized condition can be disabling. I have helped several people with celiac disease (adults and children) on disability claims.

I am a parent of 5 children with celiac disease (and I myself have gluten side affects–memory issues, migraines, temporary blindness, and seizures). Four of the children have active disease (one child also has side-effects such as anemia, hypoglycemia, and depression; the other three suffer from painful stomach cramps/diarrhea, and memory/attention problems) and one has only the gene (though also demonstrates ADD/ADHD). In one month, our grocery bill ran over $1,000 JUST for gluten free products (not including the gluten free meats, dairy products, and fruits/vegies). We will be living off one income at the end of the month. Would we qualify for anything??

    Hi,

I have Celiac Disease with other problems such as Mitral Valve Prolapse, Panic Disorder and depression. I am 54 years of age and don't feel that I can work any longer (I'm a software developer). I don't know how much a part the Celiac has played for the panic and depression. It seems to cause a host of symptoms. Any suggestions that you have to help me get on disability (I have disability insurance through my company) would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much
